Red River Paddle Challenge 2021
Yukon River Quest Crossing Lake LaBerge 2019

Brad Friesen

Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brad grew up paddling and exploring the rivers and lakes of Manitoba. Brad was immediately hooked to SUP the moment he first stood on a board and instantly thought that it would be a great idea to try river SUP surfing at Sturgeon Falls. His first time out was quite an eye opening and humbling experience, not to mention amusing to watch! Not having anyone to learn from definitely made things tougher. After much perseverance and spending countless hours on the waves, Brad mastered the secrets to river surfing Sturgeon and several other local river surfing hot spots in Manitoba.

In recent years, Brad has been spending more time training and competing in ultra distance paddling races across North America. Brad has taken a keen interest in ultra distance SUP races and adventures. Brad just recently completed the Great Alabama 650 in October 2023, becoming only the second person to ever complete the race using a stand up paddleboard for the entire duration of the race. The AL650 is the longest paddle race in the United States, covering 650 miles of water across the state of Alabama.

During the summer of 2022, Brad and his paddling partner Scott Baste (aka the Pirates of the Yukon) completed and won the SUP division of the Yukon 1000 setting a new course record in the process (7 days 6 hours 34 minutes). The Yukon 1000 is the world's longest paddle race and also one of the world's toughest survival and endurance race. The race is 1000 miles long beginning in Whitehorse, heading in to the Arctic Circle and then finishing up in Alaska. You can read about Brad's experience during on TotalSUP.

Brad has also completed several other "shorter" ultra distance races, including the Yukon River Quest (YRQ), Mississippi River 150, Chattajack 31, Big Ole Supathon, and the South Dakota Kayak Challenge. You can read about Brad's YRQ experience also on TotalSUP.

In addition to paddling long distance races, Brad is also the founder and race director of the Red River Paddle Challenge – a 44 km (~27 miles) long distance paddling race on the Red River beginning in Winnipeg, Manitoba and ending down river in Lockport, Manitoba. The race was a big success and has turned into an annual event. The next event is set to run on September 21, 2024.

Brad's passion is getting people out on the river and sharing his knowledge and experience with others. He is currently a Paddle Canada River Level 2 Sup Instructor, Advanced Flatwater SUP Instructor and Instructor Trainer. In addition to his paddling experience, Brad also has certifications in Whitewater Rescue and Wilderness First Aid.

Whether you want to take a skills course, train for an upcoming race, or just want to get out and shred some waves, Brad can get set you up for a paddling adventure in the prairies you won't forget!
